JOB DESCRIPTION

Title:School Social Worker

Reports To:Assistant Superintendent of Support Services or Director of Student Support Services

Job Summary:

The School Social Worker’s principle task is to empower students, families, and school personnel to access available opportunities and resources to fully develop each student’s potential. The School Social Worker significantly contributes to the development of a healthy, safe and caring learning environment by advancing the understanding and application of the social-emotional learning standards in the student population. School Social Workers are a vital part of the educational team, working together with students, all educational staff, family members, and the community.

Qualifications:

School Social Workers must hold a current Type-73 certification issued by the Illinois State Board of Education, which includes the completion of a Master’s Degree in Social Work from a Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) accredited program with a specialization in school social work.

Responsibilities:

The following responsibilities are based on the ISBE standards for School Social Work as stated in the Student Services Providers Recommended Practices and Procedures Manual for School Social Work (ISBE, May 2007). The first item is given highest priority and is followed in descending order by those services that are of lesser priority.

1) Emergency/crisis intervention

2) Mandates

3) Teaming

4) Consultation

5) Referral to outside agencies

6) Program development

7) Liaison work

8) Staff in-service

9) Classroom intervention

10) Group work with parents or students

11) Individual counseling with parents or students

In utilizing this model, school social workers maximize their potential for successful and meaningful impact on the school community.

Job Duties:

Possible duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assessment and Evaluation
  • Assessments as mandated as part of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)
  • Involvement in collaborative assessments which could include but are not limited to: individual problem-solving, building program needs assessments, Functional Behavioral Assessments, Behavior Intervention Plans, and standardized behavior rating scales
  • Observes students in different settings and utilizes a variety of measures, both formal and informal to assess functioning.
  • Collaboration and Consultation
  • Acts as a liaison with students, parents, school staff, and community agencies
  • Makes referrals for students and parents to appropriate resources within the school or community
  • Maintains communication with community agencies
  • Participates in individual student problem-solving meetings to support social-emotional and behavioral needs for both special education and regular education students
  • Will support the Three-Tier Model (3TM) in the school setting, including RtI and PBIS
  • Serves as a informational resource for parents, teachers, and the community regarding the needs of students
  • Coordinates programs with other student service team members
  • Advocacy
  • Works diligently to assure equity in school services
  • Demonstrates an awareness of cultural differences and needs of students and families
  • Informs teachers, parents and students of available special services for students
  • Adheres to laws and procedures involving child abuse and neglect
  • Direct Services
  • Provides crisis intervention services when needed
  • Manages caseload and develops an effective schedule based on the prioritization of services as defined by ISBE
  • Has a full legal understanding of the IEP/504 process and participates in the development, implementation, and progress monitoring of IEP/504 goals and objectives for students receiving direct or consultative services
  • Develops effective individual and group intervention strategies for students based on knowledge and understanding of students’ behavior and learning styles
  • Provides appropriate services for individual students and groups of students that meet their academic, social-emotional, and behavioral needs
  • Counsels individuals and groups regarding issues which interfere with adjustment or performance within the educational setting
  • Professionalism
  • Demonstrates professional integrity by adhering to laws of confidentiality and ethical standards defined by the profession, including the values of Service, Social Justice, Dignity and Worth of the Person, Importance of Human Relationships, Integrity, and Competence (NASW Code of Ethics)
  • Seeks out professional consultation on a consistent basis
  • Completes all school assignments and responsibilities in a timely and effective manner
  • Will attend district-wide social work meetings
  • Participates in a meaningful and continuous process of professional growth by participating in activities such as conferences, workshops, coursework, committees, etc.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the philosophy and mission of the school district, its programs and special services, and the roles of other school professionals
  • Contributes to the overall school climate by supporting school and district-wide goals

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $61,883.00 - $76,611.00 per year
